Granting specific tables

Grant only the tables that are needed, to reduce data exposure and keep governance precise.

When to use this

  • Use it when the person needs only a few tables from a schema.
  • Use it when the schema holds sensitive or varied data.
  • Use it for temporary projects or well-bounded analysis.

Before you start

  • Have the list of tables you need.
  • Confirm the purpose of use for each table.
  • Decide whether any column needs a mask or a restriction.

Step by step

  1. Open Data Governance and create a rule.
  2. Choose who will receive the access.
  3. Select the catalog and schema.
  4. Choose Specific tables.
  5. Select only the tables you need.
  6. Configure expiry, masks, or filters as needed.
  7. Simulate, review, and save.

What happens next

  • Only the selected tables become reachable.
  • New tables in the schema do not enter this rule automatically.
  • The grant is recorded and can be reviewed later.

Common errors

  • A forgotten table: the user gets access denied for it until the rule is adjusted.
  • Too long a list: a whole schema with controls may be more appropriate.
  • The wrong tables: confirm the names in the Data Catalog before saving.

Good practice

  • Use specific tables as the default, for least privilege.
  • Group tables by business objective.
  • Review the rule when the project's need changes.
