Analyze a CSV and generate a spreadsheet

Goal: turn a raw .csv file into a well-organized .xlsx spreadsheet — with a summary, tables, and, where it makes sense, charts — using the bundled excel skill.

Prerequisites​

  • Be signed in (see the Quickstart).
  • Have the CSV file accessible. In the Desktop app, it can live in the project or in the authorized read folders (Documents, Downloads, Desktop).
  • The excel skill is bundled — nothing to configure.

Step by step​

  1. Put the CSV within the agent's reach. In the Desktop app, drag the file into the project's Files tree, or use a file in Documents/Downloads/Desktop. In the terminal, the path just needs to exist.

  2. Point to the file and describe the analysis. Use @ followed by the path to reference the file, and be specific about what you want:

    @sales-2026.csv Summarize this data and generate an .xlsx with:
    - a "Summary" tab with the top 3 highlights and the totals;
    - a "By region" tab with sales summed by region;
    - a bar chart of sales by month.
    Inject the content into context (Desktop)

    @path inserts a reference to the file. To paste the content directly into context (files up to ~100 KB), open the file in the Preview dock and use + Context. See Files & artifacts.

  3. Follow the run. The agent reads the CSV, runs the analysis, and uses the excel skill to build the spreadsheet. In Run details (web chat) or in the activity panel you can see the steps.

  4. Check the result. The .xlsx appears as an artifact:

    • Desktop/TUI — open it in the Preview dock (it renders XLSX) or open it with the system app.
    • Browser chat — click Download on the artifact card.

  5. Iterate if needed. Ask for adjustments in the same conversation, without starting over:

    Add a month-over-month percent-change column to the "By region" tab
    and highlight the months with a decline in red.

Result​

An .xlsx file with the requested tabs and visualizations. On local surfaces, skill outputs land in outputs/ inside the project; in the web chat, use the artifact card's Download button.

Useful variations​

  • Other input formats. The same pattern (point with @ + ask) works to generate documents with the docx skill or PDF reports with the pdf skill.
  • Multiple files. Point to more than one (@jan.csv @feb.csv) and ask for them to be consolidated into a single spreadsheet.
  • Cleanup before analysis. Ask the agent to handle missing values or normalize categories before building the tables.
